The Great Akposso United Soccer Academy
Emieaboe Academy is located in West Africa, Ghana in the Oti region a town called Akpossokubi. Our mission is to provide children in the surrounding communities quality education through soccer. Classes begin from kindergarten to middle school. Classes run in the morning and soccer will run as an after school program. The name Emieaboe means “today is a good day”. Everyday is an opportunity to be great! A tribute to my grandmother who as advocate for education.
Where is this school
The academy is located in Oti Region, in a town called Akpossokubi, Ghana, West Africa. The primary occupation in these areas is mostly farming, trade, and fishing. The area is located close to the Volta river. Since these areas are further in the interior(six to 7 hours’ drive from the capital Accra,) most of the children lack the proper education and exposure to the outside world.
What we need now
Ghana experiences six months of summer and six months of intense rainfall. During the extreme times of each season, it is difficult to train since we don’t have any indoor infrastructure when it rains or when it is too hot. The goal is building a few classes and a shelter where we can train when it is hot or when it rain.
What has been done so far
Over the past year and most of 2021, I traveled to and lived in Ghana. In Ghana, I was able to acquire five acres of training space, and with the contributions from friends and passionate lovers for the cause, I was able to send soccer balls, uniforms and books back to Ghana, to establish a training ground where children come after school to train and learn. During my time there, we trained once a day after school and twice over the weekend(morning and evening). We also trained twice a day on holidays.
What is this Organization all about?
Our mission at The great Akposso United Soccer Academy, is to give the children in the interior region of Ghana, the opportunity for good education and life skills through soccer. The highest level of education most children attain is middle school (Junior High School). After which most of them migrate to the city to find menial labor or to learn trade. They spend many years working these menial jobs here and there, and when the city life becomes uninhabitable, they return to begin farming, have children and the cycle begins all over again. Soccer is one sports that everyone in these communities gravitate to, it is one of the few means of entertainment, an escape for the youth, community event that brings everybody together. The goal of the academy is to use Soccer as a tool to help educate and prepare the children for a better path to high school (Senior high School), to college and in life as whole.
